Metro Manila ranks 102 out of 118 in Smart City Index
There’s no doubt that the COVID pandemic has driven not just businesses’ adoption of advanced technologies, but also local government units to provide seamless public services.
Months into the pandemic, every enterprise and government around the world had to tap digital tools to make their products and services accessible to people and ensure that their processes were efficient, especially during lockdowns.
Proof that the Philippines has joined the movement was a recent recognition showing Metro Manila’s improvement in a global smart city index.
Switzerland-based IMD published its Smart City Index based on respondents’ observations of their cities’ health and safety; mobility; activities; work and school; and governance.
IMD defines a Smart City as “an urban setting that applies technology to enhance the benefits and diminish the shortcomings of urbanization for its citizens.”
While there’s no doubt that Metro Manila remained lagging behind the world and its regional peers as it only secured the 104th spot out of 118th cities, the capital region’s standing was already two notches higher from 2020—the year when the Philippines was placed under hard lockdowns, with only essential industries operating.
“This year’s findings shed light on the tectonic shifts that have disrupted logistical chains and organizational structures worldwide as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Bruno Lanvin, President of IMD’s Smart City Observatory.
According to Lanvin, efforts being pushed at the local level will continue to be “critically important” to the post-pandemic recovery.
“Smart Cities will continue to be at the forefront of this challenge,” Lanvin said.
A previous report from global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company stated that governments can raise the standards of their services using technologies, such as robotic process automation and smart workflows.
One of the digital solutions present in the market is a document management system, which enables organizations to efficiently store their files, manage, and track processes. This ensures that every progress of a project is being monitored, without the fear of compromising data due to negligence in handling physical documents.
Organizations are assured that their visions are attainable using this systematic approach.
